Most moving checklists were written for nowhere in particular. This one was built from more than 1,100 Canberra quote requests over the past five years: what people here actually move, when they move it, and where the plan usually falls apart.

When do Canberrans actually move? What five years of our data shows
Canberra does not move like the coastal cities. In our quote data, winter is the busy season: for every two enquiries we receive in summer, we receive three in winter, and June is the single busiest month of the year. December and February are the quietest. If you have flexibility, that's usable information in both directions. A summer move gives you more choice of dates, while a June or July move in Canberra means booking earlier and planning around frost-slick driveways and 7am darkness rather than heat.
Two more patterns worth planning around: about a third of our enquiries arrive on a Monday or Tuesday (people decide on the weekend and act at the start of the week, which means end-of-week dates fill unevenly), and 94% of Canberra moves in our data are local rather than interstate, with 45% staying inside the same district. Most Canberra moves are short-haul; the planning, not the driving, is where the time goes.

The end-of-lease fork (renters)
Renting adds a second deadline to the move: the final inspection. The sequence that protects your bond is furniture out, exit clean done, then inspection. Never clean around furniture or inspect around boxes. Build at least two clear days between moving day and handing back keys if your lease allows it. The settlement fork (buyers)
Buying breaks the timeline differently: settlement can move, and when it moves, everything after week 6 moves with it. The standard protection is a storage bridge: furniture collected on your planned date, held in secure storage, delivered when the keys are real. The final 48 hours: the short list that saves the day
- Essentials box - kettle, chargers, medications, a change of clothes, the documents folder, and the remote controls (travelling taped to their appliances).
- Fridge and washing machine - defrosted and drained the day before; a wet fridge in a truck is everyone's problem.
- Parking - reserve the closest legal spot for the truck at both ends; a short carry is the cheapest optimisation in moving.
- Phone charged, quote printed - the day runs off two documents: the inventory and the quote. The invoice should match the second one.
Frequently asked questions about moving in Canberra
When is the cheapest time to move house in Canberra?
Our rates don't change with the seasons: the hourly structure is the same in June as in January. What changes is availability. Quiet months (December and February in our data) mean more choice of dates and easier scheduling, and preparation changes cost more than timing does: a packed, sorted home moves hours faster at any time of year. How far ahead should I book a removalist in Canberra?
Four to six weeks ahead is the realistic window for most moves. For end-of-month dates and the June-July winter peak, work to the six-week end; for a mid-month weekday in a quiet month, shorter notice is often fine. Later than that, you're choosing from what's left rather than what suits you.
Is winter a bad time to move in Canberra?
It's Canberra's busiest moving season in our enquiry data, so no. But it rewards planning: earlier starts to use the daylight, driveways checked for frost, and dates booked ahead of the June rush.
What's different about moving within the same district?
Less than people hope: 45% of local moves in our data stay inside one district, and short distance mostly saves truck time, not planning time. Access, stairs and packing readiness still set the day's length.
Do I need a bigger plan for an apartment move?
A different one, not a bigger one: lift bookings, loading dock windows and building-manager requirements replace driveway logistics. Apartments are the most common home type we quote in Canberra, so this is standard process; see week 2 in the timeline.
What if my new home isn't ready when I have to be out?
That's the storage bridge: collection on schedule, secure storage for the gap, delivery when you have keys. It turns a crisis into a line item.
